Three Characterizability Problems in Deontic Logic
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider an infinite hierarchy of systems of Alethic Modal Logic with so-called Levels of Perfection, and add to them suitable definitions of such interesting deontic categories as those of supererogation, oVence, conditional obligation and conditional permission. We then state three problems concerning the proper characterization of the resulting logic(s) for our defined notions, and discuss two of these problems in some detail.

Competent Deontic Reasoning: The Abstract Deontic Selection Task Revisited
The abstract deontic selection task was developed with the aim of demonstrating abstract rule use in a specific domain (i.e., deontic rules). Yet, the solution rate, while being substantially higher than with abstract non-deontic tasks, did not reach the level obtained with concrete deontic tasks. What are the reasons for this—difficulties with abstract rule use? A task analysis based on deonti...
متن کاملTen Problems of Deontic Logic and Normative Reasoning in Computer Science
The ESSLLI course presents and discusses ten problems of deontic logic and normative reasoning in computer science. Five of these problems have been taken from a list of ten philosophical problems in deontic logic discussed by Hansen, Pigozzi & van der Torre [39]: how to formally represent norms, how sets of norms may be revised and merged, how contrary-to-duty obligations can be appropriately ...
متن کاملProhairetic Deontic Logic and Qualitative Decision Theory
In this paper we introduce Prohairetic Deontic Logic, a preference-based dyadic deontic logic. An obligation ‘ should be (done) if is (done)’ is true if (1) no: ^ is preferred to an ^ and (2) the preferred are . We show that this mixed representation solves several problems of deontic logic. Moreover, we discuss the relation between preferencebased deontic logic and qualitative decision theory.
متن کاملContrary to Duty Obligations A Study in Legal Ontology
In this paper the problems in deontic logic around contrary to duty obligations are used to conduct a study in basic normative ontology. Three causes of the problems around contrary to duty obligations are identified, that is 1) the attempt to analyze obligations in terms of what is ideally the case, 2) the application of deontic inheritance to the presuppositions of obligations, and 3) the fai...
متن کاملTen Philosophical Problems in Deontic Logic
The paper discusses ten philosophical problems in deontic logic: how to formally represent norms, when a set of norms may be termed ‘coherent’, how to deal with normative conflicts, how contraryto-duty obligations can be appropriately modeled, how dyadic deontic operators may be redefined to relate to sets of norms instead of preference relations between possible worlds, how various concepts of...
